But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
-Joshua 22:5
The battles were fought and won by the Israelites under the command of Joshua. Canaan, the promised land was now settled. It was time for the Eastern Tribes of the Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh, to return their possession on the other side of Jordan.
The Israelites were filled with mixed emotions as the Eastern Tribes prepared for their exit.
Before they departed Joshua publicly commended them for their fulfilment of their promise, and gave them six solemn exhortations: (1) be very careful to keep the commandment and the Law, (2) love the LORD your God, (3) walk in all His ways, (4) obey His commands, (5) hold fast to Him, and (6) serve Him with all your heart and all your soul.
Joshua’s brief charge was a simple reminder of their abiding spiritual commitment to the power and faithfulness of God who brought them to the land of Canaan. He was perhaps fearful that their separation from the rest of the tribes might cause them to forget God; go back to the gods of their fathers beyond the river, or they would turn to the gods of the Amorites, in whose land they dwelt.
God wants His people to remain true to him in worship and obedience. He expects faithfulness in peace and prosperity as well as in war and danger. He desires us to “hold fast to him” which is to have a close personal relationship with Him. God wants us to be loyal to him and reject all foreign gods and idolatry as we patiently await his soon coming. – Contributed by Dr. Milton Gregory
