And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching, and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
-Colossian 3:15-17
The apostle Paul is advising us of three (3) components that we can find in the Lord:
- The peace of God must rule in the heart and to be thankful – this is the enter of the spiritual and moral life. We receive peace from God. This peace which we receive is through the blood of the crucified Savor. It is to rule our heart by the way we live, being peaceable to all men. It is not referring to the peace you receive when you are having feeling happy but having Christ as our head, we all part of a spiritual body which gives unity and oneness. Peace indicates a bond, agreement or treaty, or an attitude of rest or security in God. Having this peace, we will be thankful or having an attitude of thanksgiving. This is showing our gratitude to God because of the peace we receive from Him.
- The Word of God should dwell richly in us – Having the Word of God in us it will make us wise, giving us instructions and admonitions. Having these instructions, we will be able to help one another with singing various types of songs, hymns, and psalms. This singing will be done in attitude of thanksgiving. Singing praise to God is largely connected with showing our gratitude to Him, rather than focusing on our ourselves or our individual needs.
- Whatever you do, do all in the name of the Lord, with giving thanks – We are to do everything in the name of the Lord and giving thanks as we do.
The development of Christian character, tending toward this state of perfection, is a growth toward beauty. The character is expressed in the countenance. The evil that is in the heart hangs out its sign, and we read briefly coarseness, unrest, selfishness, cunning, deceit, lust, falsehood, envy, pride, and malice. As the heart becomes transformed by the renewing of the mind, the graces of the Spirit leave their impress on the face, and it expresses the refinement, delicacy, peace, benevolence, and pure and tender love, that reign in the heart, and constitute the inward “adorning,” which is in the sight of God of “great price.” {ST February 12, 1885, par. 13}
